Meet Barbara Whitney, LCSW
Do you want better relationships?
Would you like to move beyond the losses you’ve suffered to find peace and contentment?
Would you like to find more meaning in your life?
I can help you accomplish all of this and more. Chances are you need to understand yourself better, to listen to your own inner wisdom, to take more responsibility for your life by facing reality. To learn to care for yourself, accept every part of yourself, and think more clearly, without distortions.
I can help you develop courage, integrity, and a stronger sense of self.
My specialty is relationship counseling with couples, individuals, and families. I will help you get past the ways you get stuck in relationships, especially your relationship with a significant other. I work with people struggling with problems that include anxiety, depression, sexual difficulties, career difficulties, adverse childhood experiences, and trauma.
My work is grounded in a number of effective therapy options including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, ACT and mindfulness meditation, Focusing (www.focusing.org), differentiation based therapy for couples (www.crucible4points.com), Love and Logic for parents (www.loveandlogic.com), and EMDR (www.emdr.org) for trauma.
I am a 1982 graduate of the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois, licensed by the State of Illinois, a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, a Certified Focusing Professional, and have advanced training in EMDR.
Call or email me, and let’s talk about your life.

If you are ready to make important changes in your life or are faced with distressing or overwhelming life challenges, a call or email to the Glenbrook Therapy Center will make a difference. Clients of the center are typically people who like to think for themselves, value responsibility and self awareness, and are looking for more creativity and purpose in their lives. But when life takes an unexpected turn, it’s hard to know what you need and who can help. For prospective clients, the Glenbrook Therapy Center offers a 15 minute phone consultation to help you understand your options. Whether you are interested in just a few counseling sessions or in more intensive therapy, your therapist will work with you to find resources uniquely suited to your personal needs. If a referral is appropriate, it will be made to an experienced, licensed therapist. Your therapy will be based on up-to-date psychological research and understanding, applied in a respectful and caring manner. It will make use of your own preferences, capabilities and wisdom, and its success will be measured by your satisfaction with the results. You will decide what improvements you want to see in your life and your outlook. Your therapy will provide new perspectives and solutions that work for you.
